La Poesie Des Affiches - Part II

My newest work is a continuation of grafiti-based work I began in New York and Paris years ago. I am endlessly fascinated by the juxtapositions and layering of signage that appear in large cities, often plastered over "post no bills" signs, in languages that mirror the culture of a country. The shredded and peeled away poster walls in Vienna are among the most captivating I've found anywhere to date. I reframe them into close compositions that are about texture and tonal value. Intriguing to me is the fact that some of the events advertised have already happened, and some are yet to come. The layering of past, present and future is what draws me to these walls again and again, as well as the graphic quality of the letters when the meanings of the words are obscured in foreign languages. In addition to the Vienna work, I have photographed these walls in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Arles, London and New York in this series.
